Tavira is a quaint Portuguese fishing town situated in the east of the Algarve, not far from the Spanish border. While it is a popular tourist destination, it has retained an old-world charm. The Gilão river flows into the Atlantic at Tavira and the estuary is a prominent feature of the town.
Like many towns in southern Portugal, Tavira suffered severe damage in the 1755 earthquake, so much of the town's architecture is late 18th century. The doors of many buildings have a lot of character and the cobblestone street designs (common across the country) are particularly creative and very well maintained (requiring skilled labor).
